DNF FOR JOHN AT HUMBOLDT

STARTED: 1ST

FINISHED: DNF

John didn't make it out of his heat race the last two starts with the USMTS this week.  He would change that Friday night at Humboldt Speedway.  John started 8th in the 4th heat race and raced his way up to finish 3rd!  That put him 8th in passing points.  The top 12 in passing points go straight to the A feature, but the top 8 redraw.  John could only better his starting position or stay the same.  He was last one to draw and the only number left was 1!  The home crowd went crazy with cheers!  John took off and lead the first two laps until 2008 National Champion Tim Donlinger got by him for the lead.  Then the race was on and John found himself back in 7th position.  He was looking to get back up to finish in the top five when the motor expired on lap 30 only ten laps to go.  John was disappionted, but atleast he got to be in the race instead of watching from the stands for the first night this week.

John is hopefully going to drive the Ed Gressel back up car tonight at Caney Valley Speedway.  Gressel Oil is a sponsor for our race team and his driver, Scott Green is a close friend.  Hope to see you there!

Hughes hauls in Humboldt ’Hunt’ hardware

HUMBOLDT, Kan. – Round 4 of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship found the mud-slinging Modifieds at the Humboldt Speedway for the third time in 2009.

And for the seventh time this season, fans saw Jason Hughes roll into the winners circle at the end of a USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Tour main event.

Friday night's victory completed a rags-to-riches climb from the USMTS cellar. On Tuesday, Hughes failed to qualify for the main event at the LA Raceway and found himself one spot short of earning a provisional starting spot. Wednesday's visit to the Monett Speedway wasn't much better as Hughes made the big show but was the first car to drop out of the race. Thursday was another step forward with a seventh-place finish at the Springfield Raceway.

Colt Mather earned the AFCO Pole Award with the most passing points during the six heat races, but redrew the eighth starting spot for the 40-lap Sunoco "A" Main while local favorite John Allen, who took the eighth and final redraw spot, drew the pole position for the drop of the green flag.

With eight-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock joining him on the front row, Allen got the jump at the start and led the first two laps before defending USMTS National Champion Tim Donlinger blasted by to take the lead.

Donlinger's lead was short-lived, however, as he tagged a tractor tire lining the inside of the track on lap 6 and limped into the infield with a broken Modified.

Dustin Boney assumed the top spot with Donlinger's retirement, and held the top spot through lap 11 before Hughes powered ahead along the bottom of turn 4.

Shryock followed Hughes into the second spot but, despite three caution flags over the last half of the race, was unable to mount a serious challenge on the current USMTS Southern Series points leader.

Zack VanderBeek started 16th on the 26-car grid and clawed his way to a third-place finish and earned the PBM Performance Products Hard Charger Award.

Tommy Myer steered his Snickers-sponsored mount to a fourth-place paycheck, while Rodney Sanders recorded his fourth top-5 finish in four ’Hunt’ starts.

Boney held on for sixth, Texan Morgan Bagley was seventh, Mike Steensma and Eddie Martin had their best runs of the ’Hunt’ in eighth and ninth, respectively, and Dean Mahlstedt recovered from a mid-race spin to finish in the tenth spot.

With his runner-up finish, Shryock regained the points lead he lost to Sanders after Wednesday's event, and now leads the 19-year-old by four points (424 to 420). VanderBeek sits third with 374 markers, followed by Dereck Ramirez (338), Myer (335), Hughes (331), Ryan Gustin (311), Bagley (299), Jon Tesch (296) and Al Hejna (294).

Round 5 of the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship takes place tomorrow (Saturday, Aug. 15) at the Caney Valley Speedway in Caney, Kan., for another $3,000-to-win, $250-to-start battle royale. Pit gates open at 4:00 and grandstands will open up at 5:00. Hot laps are slated for 7:30 and the green flag waves to start the first heat race at 8:00. Local Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and Turf Cars will also be on the racing card.

Race fans can pick up $2-off coupons on Saturday at Casey's General Stores locations in Caney, Coffeyville and Independence. Fans can meet USMTS driver Tommy Myer and see his new Modified sponsored by Snickers at the Casey's General Store located at 101 N. Magee St. in Caney from 12:00 to 2:00.
