Clyde Ellis Memorial Night #1

STARTED 19TH FINISHED 21T 64 modifieds checked in for Friday night's $1,500 to win show at Lakeside Speedway in KC, KS. John drew 82 which put him starting 7th in the 5th heat race. He finished 3rd. The top 2 finishers of each heat race transferred to the A and 3rd and 4th place had to run the B. John started 5th and finished 3rd in the B. In the A he started 19th and finished 21st. Grabouski and Eric Turner Shine On Night One Of The "Clyde Ellis Late Model Showdown and Modified Shootout" Kansas City, KS - The "Clyde Ellis Late Model Showdown & Modified Shootout" was everything you would expect to see at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, KS. Finally, after a month off due to bad weather, the races went off as scheduled. Beautiful weather conditions, over 100 competitors and great racing action highlighted the 1st night on Friday. Jordan Grabouski has been to Lakeside Speedway a few times. Until last nigh, Grabouski had never finished in the top 5, let alone take home a win. Last night was his to shine as he laid waste to a very stout field of cars on his way to the feature win in the Modified division. The win earned him $1,500 for his efforts. Clint Bowyer and John O'Neal Jr. started on the front row. Bowyer and Grabouski would get the early lead and Grabouski would roll by Bowyer and take the lead on the low side. Once in the lead, Grabouski, from Beatrice, Ne., put his Razor Chassis on the high side and didn't miss a beat all night long. He would expand the lead, navigate traffic and would do it on only 7 cylinders! That's right. I said 7 cylinders. When Grabouski came around to victory lane, it was discovered that a plug wire had fallen off. It seemed that those 7 cylinders were more than enough to get the job done. The track was smooth and dry slick. It was a surface that Grabouski has become very familiar with. After winning his heat race, Grabouski, continued on his impressive night with the feature win. A feature win that has to make the IMCA competitor very happy in a field full of outlaw Modifieds. Ken Schrader finished in the 2nd position. Schrader gave the crowd one of the most competitive races of the evening as he and Kerry Davis battled side by side for the majority of their heat race. Schrader would hold Davis off and get the win. Schrader looks to have made some solid improvements in his Modified race program. It seems as if Clint Bowyer hadn't missed a beat behind the wheel of a Modified. Bowyer won his heat race early in the night. During the feature he had the lead early before slipping up coming out of turn number two. The slip cost Bowyer a slew of spots. He would recover nicely as he drove back to a 3rd place finish. "I feel comfortable behind the wheel of a modified, " said Bowyer "It's fun to come back out here and mix it up with these guys." The 4th position went to Johnny Fennewald. Fennewald, a tough competitor on the short tracks in the area, showed he can be just as effective on the 1/2 mile tracks with a top 5 finish. Rounding out the top 5 was John O'Neal Jr. O'Neal was the highest placing Lakeside regular on the night. 64 Modifieds checked in for action on Friday night. The Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models were the main attraction on the night and as the points season winds down the action on the track is heating up. The night belonged to Eric Turner. Turner, driving Gary Christian's backup ride, finished 2nd in his heat race and with the passing points it put him in the A main. From there he would start on the front row and at the drop of the green flag, Turner checked out for his 1st MLRA Feature win. Through the entire feature Turner would go unchallenged. Gaining the win was impressive enough but to win it the way he did was even more impressive. Behind Turner it was like a madhouse. Spots were being contested for, 3 to 4 wide racing was evident and great driving was shown by all in the drivers in the field. Jeremy Payne turned in a solid effort as he would finish in the runner-up spot. Payne's car owner, Terry Phillips, struggled early in the night with mechanical issues that forced him to scratch from the event. A surprise for most of the fans in attendance. Finishing in the 3rd position was a former MLRA Champion, Al Purkey. Purkey came all the way from the 6th row to edge out the 4th place car of David Turner right at the flag stand. It was a daring and close move. The most important part is that it worked and the crowd loved it. Series points leader, Brad Looney, garnered the fifth place in the main event. Fans will get to see great action at Lakeside Speedway once again tonight as night number 2 concludes the "Clyde Ellis Late Model Showdown and Modified Shootout." Spectator gates open up at 5 p.m. Hot laps will begin at 7 p.m. and the first heat race goes green at 7:30 p.m. Adult tickets are $25 (night of), kids 8 to 14 are $6 and children 7 and under are always FREE at Lakeside Speedway.
