Driving his Wise Racing, Hughes Chassis Modified Powered by Sputts Racing Engines, Kansas City’s Dustin Boney conquered the ‘Historic Half Mile’ at Missouri State Fair Speedway as part of Kasey Kahne’s King of Sedalia World of Outlaws night of competition during the W-K Chevrolet Modifieds Tuesday night. Fresh off a winning weekend, Boney tallied his third Modified victory in just a five-day span by leading wire-to-wire in a race that was cut short by two laps due to time constraints. It doesn’t seem to matter this season, whether it’s a big track, small track, high-banked track, semi-banked track, or a flat track, Boney is flat out getting things done and leaving many drivers scratching their heads and wondering what they have to do to beat him.
With the rest of the field having a stellar race behind him, Boney was never seriously challenged in his deuces wild #22 en route to his latest victory. From the drop of the green flag, he stayed glued to the low side of the speedway and at times had a full straightaway advantage over various drivers occupying the runner-up position. Early on, Cameron, Missouri’s Mark Dotson looked as though he might use the high side to advance in his Tri-Rivers Logging #85d but he found himself in a furious battle to hold onto a top-five finish by late in the race. John Allen was unable to mount a serious challenge after many fans speculated he would be the one to beat on the flat half mile. The Chanute, Kansas driver ran as high as second place by lap six but faded to tenth when the checkered flag waved in his Hughes chassis modified. One of the biggest gains of the night was made by eleventh-starting Jason Thompson of Concordia, Missouri who worked his way inside the top five by lap eleven and ultimately into second at race end in a Hughes chassis. Another driver who advanced many positions was second-generation Fulton, Missouri driver Kevin Blackburn, also in a Hughes, who held second for much of the later portion of the race. Thompson was able to slip by Blackburn late in the race on the white-flag lap but the Fulton driver held on to run a strong third at the checkers. James McMillin of Warrensburg, Missouri had a strong finish to the race advancing from seventh to fourth in his Shaw race car with Dotson in fifth, Shad Badder sixth, Curt Potter seventh, Aaron Poe eighth, Austin Siebert ninth and Allen tenth at the finish. The three W-K Chevrolet heat races were claimed by Allen, Dotson, and Boney earlier in the evening. There were 25 modified drivers on hand for the evening’s action.
The next event at the Missouri State Fair Speedway takes place on Friday, August 6th for the first-ever “Battle of the Badges” event, benefiting the Missouri Special Olympics. The race night features the Subway Late Models and W-K Chevrolet Modifieds in a full night of racing, highlighted by local law enforcement members battling it out in custom painted and sponsored Crown Victoria Police Interceptor race cars to raise money for Special Olympics. The officers will also be competing for bragging rights and the title of “Top Cop” during the action. This event will surely be one for the entire family with lots of entertainment and giveaways as well as the best late model and modified drivers in the Midwest battling for the win at the speedway. General admission for this night is $18, seniors and military $15, kids six to twelve years $9, five and under are free. Law enforcement members may show their badge at the admission area and save $5 on their ticket. To enter your local law enforcement into the event or for general information visit www.missouristatefairspeedway.com for rules or call 573-690-0443 or 816-522-8343. Gates will open at 3 p.m. with a test and tune session for the coppers at 6 p.m. Racing begins at 7:30 for the W-K Chevrolet Modifieds and Subway Late Models. For ULMA competitors, this will count as a ULMA points-awarding event.
