20 B-MODS
STARTED 13TH
FINISHED 8TH
Kenton drew the 7th starting spot in the first heat race. He managed to get to 5th with a broken slider. That put him starting the A feature on the inside of row 8. He had some good passes and some cautions set him back, but he finished 8th. Congratulations to Tyler Kidwell on the win and Brian McGowen for a close 2nd place finish! Kenton will be back in action on Saturday at Springfield Raceway. Hope to see you there!
TYLER KIDWELL TAKES BIG MONEY B-MOD WIN WIRE TO WIRE AT HUMBOLDT SPEEDWAY!
By Scott Lee Stewart
Dateline: July 17, 2020
He’s known as Big Dog (as in “Run With The Big Dogs, or Stay On The Porch!). On this steamy summer night at Humboldt Speedway, Tyler Kidwell showed the world exactly why.
The event was a $600.00 to win Ray’s Metal Depot B-Mod feature. Good money in these parts. The 20 car starting field was set through the heats. Pole position went to Shadren Turner, from St Joesph, Mo., a stranger to Humboldt Speedway. He was blistering fast in the heats, looking good for the high dollar feature. Beside him, on the outside, was Kidwell. Behind them, 18 of fastest B-Mods to be found anywhere.
At the drop of the flag, Kidwell put a hole shot on everyone, into the lead. Turner fell into lock step in second, with a massive dogfight behind. The first ten laps passed quickly.
Then came a caution flag. Suddenly the field bunched up, Kidwell’s big lead gone. This was the last race of the night. The track was taking rubber. 10 laps to go. One would assume it was now any ones race.
At the restart, Kidwell once again drove away. A couple of more yellow flags would bunch the field again, but it was a race for second. With traction now at a premium, and the field running 3 wide across the entire length of the Hummer High Banks, it was Brian McGowen of Pittsburg, Ks. who mounted the charge, holding back Ft. Scott’s cagey veteran Randy Zimmerman for second, and putting pressure on Kidwell. There weren’t enough laps remaining, however, and McGowen and Zimmerman finished a whisper close second and third. Matt Kay secured fourth with Shad Turner fifth.
Ryan Smith of Moran, Ks. secured front row pole for the Love’s Travel Stops Midwest Modified 20 car feature thanks to a strong showing in the heat races, and proceeded to engage in a fierce battle with young Jackson McGowen, a fellow heat race winner. Smith was able to fend off McGowen for the wire to wire win, with McGowen a close second. Trever Vann finished third, with veteran Casey Jesseph in fourth, and Bronson, Ks. driver Ronnie Colter finishing fifth.
17 Factory Stocks started the 16 lap Home Savings Bank Factory Stock feature, minus Kylee Jarman, who survived one of the most wicked crashes in the history of the Hummer. Thankfully, Kylee escaped a bit dazed but otherwise unscathed.
Jon “Dovey” Westhoff continued his Factory Stock win streak, despite intense pressure from runner up Scott Collins. Wayne Johnson of Humboldt secured a strong third, with Chanute’s Jason Thurman fourth. Kenny “The Dude” Schettler started dead last in the field and drove his way into fifth.
O’Reilly Auto Parts Sports Compact feature action saw Scott Vink dominate the 15 car field for the win. Earlton Ks. driver Allen Jesseph battled from the rear of the field to claim second with Garrett Waun third, Cayden Vance fourth, and Jonathan Culler fifth.
Racing action resumes next week, with a full field of cars in all classes and $500 to win $100 to start Street Stocks
