Thursday, Feb. 28 - Dunn Gets 'er Done in Modified A-Main Qualifier

John drew 22 for a starting spot Thursday night. He won the 2nd heat race, but didn't acquire many passing points since he started on the front row. He would have to start 11th in the A feature. He fell short, finishing 7th and will have to try again Friday night.

FORT WORTH, Texas - Day one of the Pro Cuts Texas World Dit Track Championships saw changes in the program with the LImited Modifieds replacing the SUPR Late Model series. A smaller car count than the past years still saw over 150 teams (107 Modifieds and 48 Limited Modifieds) sign in for their shot at the prestigeous Texas Motor Speedway trophy. It was more quality than quantity in the Modified class as top drivers from nine states (Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Missouri, Kansas and Colorado) made for a star-studded field.

The first night of qualifying would be set through passing points in the heats, taking the top 16 to the A-main, then C- and B-Mains to fill the remainder of the field. The night's top four finishers would then be locked in for the big Saturday Championship finale

After garnering the most passing points in heat race action, Clyde Dunn Jr. started on the pole of the 15-lap A-Main Qualifier. Dunn got out front early, then held off hard charging Randy Timms in the final laps to get the win.

As the 24-car field took the green, Dunn got a big jump on the field with Chad Wheeler getting by Paul White for second. At the back of the pack, Trent Crawford, Chase Allen and Curtis Allen tangled to bring out yellow on lap 1. On the restart, Troy Taylor got by Davd Smith Jr. for fifth, but Smith fought back to retake the spot until he spun while trying to get by Grag Skaggs for fourth.

Once under green again Timms was making his charge, from his 18th starting spot, to challenge Morgan Bagley for seventh. On lap 3, White got past Wheeler for second, while Timms sailed past Taylor and Skaggs for fourth. Skaggs didn't give up easily as he and Timms swapped the spot fo several laps until halfway when Timms secured the position.

At the crossed flags it was Dunn, White, Wheeler, Timms and Skaggs in the top five. Timms then picked off Wheeler for third on lap 9 and ran down White on lap 11. Two laps later, Timms got by the former USAC Silver Crown champion, White with two to go. Up front, Dunn was on cruise control not knowing Timms was on the move. Timms cut into Dunn's margin, but never mounted a serious challenge as Dunn grabbed the victory.

FORT WORTH, Texas - After putting Jim Thorne's Limited Modified in the Championship feature Thursday night, Chris Brown followed that up with a Modified A-Main Qualifier win on Friday night. Brown outdeuled Troy Taylor and Tate Cole at the start of the 15-lapper, then ran away to take the checkers.

Brown, Taylor and Cole dove three wide into turn 1 as green waved on the 24-car modified field. Brown came out on top, with Cole second, Taylor third and Morgan Bagley grabbing fourth. Logan Cabbell spun on lap 1 to bring out a caution that saw Cole retire with a broken front suspension after contact with Taylor. On the restat, Brown got ahead by four car lengths and quickly began to stretch out his lead, while Taylor, Sean Jones, Bagley, Dee Gossett and Justin Boney battled it out for second.

Gossett got fourth from Bagley on lap 3 as Brown increased his margin. By lap 5 Brown had a full straightaway lead, while Jones' night came to an end when he broke and pulled to the infield. Just before halfway Brown hit the tail end of traffic with Taylor, Gossett, Bagley and Boney rounding out the top five at the mid-point.

Lyle Sheppard brought out the yellow on lap 7 when he found the wall between turns 1-2. Once back under green, Brown again jumped out to a good lead as Johnny Dunn and Richard Griffin ran wheel to wheel for sixth, with Greg Skaggs joining that battle. Bagley then started looking to take a spot back from Gossett on lap 8, and getting third on lap 9 as Boney moved in on Gossett.

Skaggs got around Griffin for sixth on lap 10, as Brown was sailing into the night. Bagley closed in on Taylor running side by side on lap 11, with Gossett and Boney battling for fourth as Skaggs ran them down. As the white flag waved, Brown again had a full straight lead, with Boney getting by Gossett for the final transfer spot. At the checkers it was Brown in the JD's Body Works, Hwy. 105 Machine, Simpson Racing Products, Performance Graphix, Signature Motorsports, Skyrocket Chassis getting the victory

FORT WORTH, Texas - In his fourth attempt at the Pro Cuts TWDTC, Oklahoma City's Randy Timms finally found his way to the TMS Dirt Track Winner's Circle. Timms would lead all but one lap of the 40-lapper on his way to big $3,000 payday.

Polesitter Justin Boney was first into turn 1 as the 24-car field roared in action. Coming out of turn 2, Timms had a god run getting by Morgan Bagley for second, then Boney coming out of turn 4 for the lead. Boney tried to cross back under Timms, but ended up losing second to Brown on the high side. Casual contact in the mid-pack battle for tenth split the field up. On lap 3, Brown drifted too high in turns 3-4, allowing Boney to retake the spot.

Troy Taylor and Paul White were side by side for fifth on lap 4, with Chad Wheeler lurking in seventh. A lap later Taylor and Wheeler both got by Paul White, but Paul White fought back on Wheeler to recapture the spot. Brown, looking to complete the weekend sweep, then began putting the pressure back on Boney for second. By lap 10, Timms had built a good lead over Boney and Brown with a gap back to Bagley, Taylor and Paul White, while Dee Gossett, Wheeler, Bobby Malchus and John Allen battled for eighth.

Paul White momentarily grabbed fifth from Taylor, but Taylor came back by and got along side Bagley for fourth. The top four then separated out, while Paul White got by Bagley for fifth. On lap 17, George White spun from a five car scrap for the fourteenth spot to bring out yellow and erase Timms' big lead. On the restart, Boney tried to challenge Timms on the high side, while Taylor got inside Brown for third. Timms and Boney ran wheel to wheel for the lead on lap 19 and at he crossed flags it was Boney, by a bumper, Timms, Brown back by Taylor and Paul White in the top five.

Boney's lead was short lived as Timms was back on the point for lap 21, as Allen passed Bagley for sixth and Malchus followed to seventh. In the pack, Gossett, Wheeler and Greg Skaggs were three wide for ninth. On lap 25, Timms was lengthening his advantage over Boney, who held a good margin over Taylor. In the meantime Brown and Paul White were swapping the fourth spot in a spirited battle. Gossett and Wheeler were three wide again, this time with Bagley in the fight for ninth.

Brown and Paul White were still at it for fourth on lap 31, as Timms was catching the rear of the field. Lap 34 saw Boney's chance at a top finish end as his car shot straight into the turn 3 wall to bring out the final caution. Timms got a good jump on green, while Wheeler tried a bonzai charge on the outside to pick up positions. With five to go, Allen, Paul White and Malchus battled ard for fourth, with Wheeler, Gossett and Skaggs closing. That pack went three wide for sixth as the top three motored away. As the white flag waved, Timms had a ten car margin over Taylor, while the fight for fourth now went three wide. As the checkers waved it was Timms taking the victory.
