Fuqua Blasts To Tom Karrick Modified Memorial Win!

A happy Darron Fuqua celebrates in victory lane with the Karrick family members. PictureMeRacing.Com
The members of Tom Karrick’s family go out and drum up support for this race. In 2012 the Karrick family brought in an additional $7,500 dollars to be added on to the regular purse on Friday night. This meant that the winner would get $1,600. Every spot in the feature event was guaranteed extra money. Just to make the race paid $260. New drivers rolled into Lakeside in hopes of taking home the big prize.
At the start of the feature Rick Beebe got the jump on everyone as he shot to the lead. Unfortunately for Beebe, track officials decided that he started a little too early. A yellow flag was thrown and they would have to start the race over again.
On the 2nd start Bubba Harvey took to the top spot at the drop of the green flag. Harvey has had a tough year in 2012. For the first half of the race it looked as if he had turned his luck around and had the possibility of cashing in on the big money.
On lap 13 Harvey would encounter his 1st lapped car. As he prepared to go into turn #1, the 2nd place car of Darron Fuqua blew past Harvey on the low side and took away the top spot. A surprising twist after Fuqua finished 5th in his heat race. Changes during the break turned him from a donkey to a stallion by the feature.
Fuqua would sit at the top spot and build a solid lead. Friday night was a different track surface after all the rain in the afternoon. It helped breed yellow flags during the feature. Fuqua, a 3x feature winner on season, would have his lead wiped out numerous times do to the yellow flags.
Action throughout the field was at a fever pitch. One driver in particular, former track champion John Allen, returned to put on a show for the Lakeside Speedway fans. Allen had a tough heat race and had to compete in the B feature just to make the main event. Allen would win the B Main and started 21st on the grid in row #11, by the time the last yellow of the night went in the air, Allen was in the 2nd spot. Allen drove like a man possessed as he rocketed past other 19 competitors. The last yellow of the night would set up a green, white, checkered scenario.
As the green came back out Beebe would get a good jump on Allen and reclaim 2nd for the time being. As Beebe and Allen battled it allowed Fuqua to get away, once again, and fly to the checkers for his 4th win of the 2012 season. The win was worth $1600 and it put his name alongside a high profile list of others who have won Tom Karrick Memorial features.
Allen would race by Beebe to finish 2nd, Beebe would hold on to finish 3rd, 4th went to Aaron Marrant and rounding out the top 5 was Tim Karrick.
Tim Shields has been waiting for a victory in 2012. The former track champion and multiple time feature winner has seen a wild array of bad luck this season. From broken parts to lapped traffic, Tim Shields has had the worst luck of any driver in the past 10 years at the track. He can forget about all of that now as he drove to victory lane in the Grand National feature.
It wouldn’t take Shields long to get to the front of the field. He blasted to the top spot on the 1st lap of the night. He would lead lap after lap after lap. Shields had seen this before. He has led laps only to see it get yanked away in the final few laps of the main event. It wouldn’t be that way on Friday night. Yellow flags were the only time that the other competitors were able to get a good glimpse at Shields. For the first time this season he pulled down the victory.
Jim Baker finished in the 2nd spot, Don Marrs drove to a 3rd place finish, 4th was Kelby Ostrander and Gary Donaldson finished in the 5th spot.
The story of the night in the Grand National division was the bad luck of the points leader, Darren Kling. Kling lost an engine early in the feature event. Not only did the bad break cost him a motor, it also handed the points lead back over to Ostrander. Ostrander now has a 9 point lead on Kling with 3 points races left in the season.
There is a driver on a hot streak in the B Mod division! Jake Richards stormed to his 2nd straight win in the B Mod division on Friday night.
Richards, like the other feature winners on the night, didn’t hesitate getting to the front of the field. As Richards piloted his way to the front, it appears that he has become comfortable in his B Mod. At the beginning of the season Doug Richards, Jake’s father, was behind the wheel of this ride but as the season went on Doug decided to put Jake in the car to see how he would do. It took a little time, but it looks as if Jake has figured this car out from top to bottom and he has become a threat to win on any given night.
Twenty-seven B Mods checked in on Friday night and the racing action was hot and heavy. Just like in the Grand Nationals the big story of the night revolved around a points leader going down because of a mechanical failure.
Gene Claxton entered the night as the points leader in the division with a 29 point cushion. Early in the feature it looked like Claxton would suffer an engine problem taking him out of the race. Once out it left the door open for Nick Newton, the 2nd place driver in the points, to take the top spot. At the end of the night Newton would have the points lead by a mere 2 points.
Chad Feather, the youngster, finished with a strong runner up finish, 3rd went to David Holcomb, who debuted a new ride on Friday night, 4th was Rodney Schweizer and Nick Newton, the points leader, finished in 5th.
The Factory Stock division has been ultra-competitive in 2012. Almost every feature has been decided by a small margin. This is why it was no surprise that the Factory Stock feature went down to the wire, yet again!
Caleb McClellan jumped out to the advantage from the drop of the green flag. At the front, Mclellan ran away from the competiton. A yellow flag would be the one thing that could slow down McClellan’s momentum and it did.
On the restart Barnes and Cliff Hedges Jr. provided viable threats to McClellan’s top spot.
As the green waved again it was McClellan and Barnes going toe-to-toe for supremacy. Barnes would chase down McClellan and then the battle heated up as the two went door to door. Barnes would take over the top spot, McClellan would get it back and they would both be in a dead heat coming to the white flag.
On the final lap, Barnes would get the advantage in the final turn and come out with a slim lead and the victory. Another great finish on the 2012 season.
Cliff Hedges Jr. would get 2nd, after McClellan would be disqualified, 3rd was Phillip Holcomb, Scotty Moore finished in 4th and rounding out the top 5 was Kerry Ayres.
