RUNNER UP AT HEARTLAND PARK TOPEKA

24 modifieds were divided into 4 heat races.  John started 4th in the 4th heat race and ran second.  That put him 5th in passing points.  They do an inversion on the start for the A feature and John started inside the 2nd row.  On the start John was running 2nd behind leader and pole sitter #77 Steven Bowers Jr.  For the first 9 laps John went low and Bowers cut him off, John went high and Bowers went to the top.  Just as John finally got around Bowers the yellow flag flew.  Meanwhile the #87 of Darren Fuqa was making his way up to third.  On the restart Bowers was in front, John took the inside and Fuqua took outside row two.  Fuqa drove by John and Bowers on the top as Bowers once again cut John off on the bottom.  Now John was running 3rd.  The next yellow was awesome.  Fuqua was the leader, Bowers took the inside and John was on the outside of row two.  John went to the top took the lead and set sail, only  to have the back cars pile up in turn one!  A complete restart was set again, only this time Bowers took the outside and John was on the inside of row two.  John easily took second away from Bowers, but was never able to get the run he needed to pass Fuqua again for the lead.  John settled for second and Fuqua took the win.
John will be back at Humboldt Speedway on Friday, July 15 for the SMP race.  Hope to see you there!
 

Fuqua wins Steve Bowers Sr. Memorial at Heartland Park Topeka

It was a great evening at HPT.Com Speedway on Saturday night. The 2nd Annual Steve Bowers Sr. Memorial Race packed in more excitement that most 4th of July Fireworks.

The fans that were in attendance on Saturday night saw their fair share of great racing action.

In the Modified Feature, it was shapping up to be a repeat of the previous year. Steven Bowers Jr., last year's winner, started on the pole for the 30 lap feature after inverting the first 5 rows. Would anyone be able to beat Bowers starting from the front row? Darron Fuqua might have had an answer.

For winning his heat race earlier in the night, Fuqua earned a 10th row starting spot for the main event. The green flag came out and Fuqua, a 6 time feature winner heading into the night, stepped on the loud pedal. In just a matter of a few laps he worked past 7 cars, good enough for 3rd.

The battle at the beginning was between Bowers and Modified ace, John Allen. Early in the race Allen would pass Bowers for the lead, only to see it wipped out by a yellow flag.

Once the went back to green flag action, Fuqua jumped to the high side and went around both Allen and Bowers for the lead. From there he put his ride at the front of the field and never looked back. It would be his 7th win of the season and it was worth an extra $538, not bad for a night's work.

Allen would finish 2nd, Kyle Covert put on one of his better runs of the year finishing in 3rd, 4th was Bowers Jr. and rounding out the top 5 was Josh Everhart.

Modified heat race winners were; Fuqua, Brian Murphy, Kerry Davis and Kyle Covert.

Dave Samuels hasn't seen victory lane in a long while. It just seems like yesterday that the driver from Tecumseh raced his way to win #5. Since that time, other drivers have been stepping up their programs and have made things tough for Samuels. As extra money was put down for Saturday night's feature, Samuels made it tough on this fellow competitors.

Justin Siefert held the top spot for the 1st half of the 20 lap feature, but Samuels was on the move. He worked low, he worked high and he worked in the middle. Samuels was searching for the groove that would take him to the front of the pack. He found it.

The high line around the speedway has been a lucrative place for Samuels. Saturday night, he returned to the high side of the track when he needed it most. He also put himself in some hairy spots too. Three wide and running in the middle wouldn't have been my choice for the preferred line, but Samuels had to make some bold moves to get to the front of the field.

He worked his magic to perfection. He worked high to get around his fellow racers and then he dropped to protect the bottom of the race track. A place that he knew, would be coveted by other racers.

In the end it was Samuels getting his 5th win of the season and he also gained some valuable points.

Tyson Young turned in a fine performance finishing 2nd, 3rd went to Gerald Wahwahsuck, 4th was Siefert and Leif Weyer added his 1st top 5 of the season finishing 5th.

Heat race winners were; Samuels, Young and Matt Field.

It was another eventful evening for the B Mod division.

The only female competitor in the class, Shelby Calderwood, raced her way to the front of the pack at the beginning of the night. In the beginning she built up a sizeable lead, but a yellow flag would bunch her back up with the field.

Two time feature winner, Mike Higley, was on the move. In the past weeks feature races have had their laps shortened and this time Higley wasn't going to play any games. Higley wanted to get to the front and now. He accomplished this goal by weaving in and out of traffic.

Higley has been a tough competitor. Racing with Mike Ladish has brought out some very important qualities in Higley's competitive fire.

Last week's feature winner, Brian Murphy, pulled in another top 2 finish in 2nd, 3rd went to the veteran Jack Frost, 4th was the youngster from Gardner, Dalton Kirk and 5th was Brian Hey.

Heat race winners were Murphy, Higley, Marty Grist and Dustin Thulin.

For the 9th time this season it was Zach Henery roaring to the win in the Pure Stock class.

Henery put an epic beat down on the field. His margin of victory stretched out further than 3/4 of the track at HPT. It was a win he wanted to make sure he brought home.

Henery got everything he wanted. He won a heat race and dominated in the feature event. He extended his current points lead on the competition and continued to win more features than anyone else at HPT.Com Speedway.

Rodney Walker put a strong finish in the runner up spot, Randy Kohn put his noise into another top 5 finish coming home in 4th, Jimmy Millard finished in the 3rd spot, 4th was Millard and rounding out the top 5 was Sandy Tanner.

Heat race winners were Henery and Kohn.

Summer start times are still in effect. Spectator gates open up at 6 p.m., hot laps will be at 6:45 p.m. and the racing goes green at 7:30 p.m.
