Father’s Day is a special holiday, and this year’s Father’s Day weekend show at Thunder Hill put some great racing on the track, with first-time (for 2011) winners in each class. The evening’s headline IMCA Modified feature saw the “Big Dog,” Travis Patch, return to a Victory Lane that he virtually owned a few years ago. Joining him with the checkers was Lance Lincoln (IMCA Northern SportMods), Mike Nichols (Heinen Repair Service IMCA Stock Cars), and Dominic Thyfault (BuyRaceParts.com IMCA Hobby Stocks).

“Stop Jordan Grabouski!” has been the cry of the IMCA Modified competitors at Thunder Hill in 2011, as Grabouski competes at the Hill as part of his pursuit of the IMCA National Championship. The last person to beat the Beatrice driver was Tom Charles, on May 7. Saturday night, hometown driver Travis Patch got the job done.

The early pace was set by Brent Alverson and Nic Bidinger, as Patch bided his time and worked his way past Bidinger. At midrace, Patch slipped beneath Alverson for the lead, but quickly came under fire from Johnny Allen, who was joining the IMCA competition on this night. Grabouski and Allen staged a great battle for second behind Patch, with Grabouski prevailing on the last lap. At the finish, the order was Patch, Grabouski, Allen, Jeff Herbers, and Alverson.

Lance Lincoln’s path to victory in the IMCA Northern SportMod feature was very different than Patch’s. Like the Modifieds, the SportMods featured some wild racing action – but it was all behind Lincoln as he used his outside front row starting spot to take a lead which he never relinquished. Meanwhile, behind Lincoln, there were some exciting charges through the pack. Second place Jesse Shotts advanced from 9th, third place Curtis Dreasher came from 7th, fourth place Kyle Olberding advanced 11 spots from 15th, and fifth place Mike Taylor came from 11th.

The 2010 IMCA National Stock Car Champion Mike Nichols had made plans to visit Thunder Hill a few times in 2011 (Nichols used 8 Thunder Hill wins to help win the title last year), but it seemed that Mother Nature was determined to keep him away – every planned trip was rained out. Finally, on Saturday Night, Nichols was able to start a Heinen Repair Service IMCA Stock Car feature, and proved that he’d not forgotten his way to Victory Lane. The Stock Cars provided some of the wildest racing of the night, as Marvin Griffith Jr. and Jim Powell Jr. battled for the lead in the early stages.

Meanwhile, all eyes were on Nichols and Kyle Vanover as they made their way through the field and toward the showdown that everyone expected. The two did not disappoint; Vanover took the lead first with Nichols close behind. After a tough battle, Nichols was able to clear Vanover on the high side and held off several challenges for the win. Behind Vanover, Powell Jr., Griffith Jr., and Jeff Miller filled out the top five.

In BuyRaceParts.com IMCA Hobby Stock action, Dominic Thyfault took an early lead and held it to the end of the feature. Behind him, the field strung out a bit, with Jacob Crowell having a clean run to second, Mallory Walters taking third, Brock Alverson fourth, and Travis Darnall fifth.

Action resumes at the Hill next Saturday night, June 25, with all four IMCA classes competing. The pit gates open at 5:00 PM. Driver’s Meeting will be at 6:00 PM, with hot laps at 6:30 PM, and racing to follow. Thunder Hill Speedway is located at 11995 142nd Road, in Mayetta, KS (two miles west of US-75 on 142nd).
