THIRD PLACE FINISH FOR DWAINE WHITWORTH MEMORIAL

STARTED 11TH

FINISHED 3RD

Memorial Day Weekend is always filled with special races.  On Sunday we raced at Humboldt Speedway at the Dwaine Whitworth Memorial Race.  This is a special race for us because Dwaine was a great guy and we had the honor of knowing him for many years.  This year's race was a little different because it was a NCRA vs USRA race.  As many of you know John is a 3-time NCRA champion.  It was fun to see some of the racers  and NCRA staff that we used to see when John competed on that circut.
 On to the race....
Over 40 modifieds were on hand Sunday night.  John started the fourth heat race in third.  Ryan Whitworth and Casey McClaskey were on the front row.  Casey raced high and Ryan was right beside him on the outside.  John kept trying to make a move under Casey.  John seemed to be faster than both Ryan and Casey, just couldn't find a place to make the pass.  About halfway through the race John passed Ryan for second, but then the yellow flag came out and John had to go back to 3rd.  Then with only 2 laps remaining Ryan made the outside line work and took the lead from Casey.  John tried to go to the top as well and ran out of time.  Ryan took the heat race win, Casey was second and John third.
Only the top 10 cars in passing points out of the heat races went straight to the A feature.  John had to start the B feature in sixth.  The top 10 finishers in the B would transfer to the A.  John drove to the front and took the win!
In the A feature John started 11th.  The race went green for the first 17 laps.  John was the fastest car on the track and raced up to third.  First and second were way out on him and when the yellow flag flew it looked like that was all John would need to capture the win.  However, as the race continued the car didn't seem to be as fast and John had to settle for third.
This was a great finish for the race team after having two bad nights this weekend.
